  • What is the relationship between your concepts and your style? MN
  • They are friends I think. . . .I feel that when I find something conceptual to work off of it helps my create something very respondent to it, but I am still growing in a conceptual direction so my art is still in process of finding a real connective link to style and concept. I see art in all sorts of medium so when I find my connection with that medium everything will fall into place.
  •  How much do you plan before you commit to a project? MN
  • I usually plan to much and become over stimulated by ideas and medium. I think that it is to vast of a project and start over. This year I have kept REFINEMENT, SIMPLICITY in mind so that I can better conquer my artistic goals. Movement and getting your hands dirty is the first start to creativity.
  •  Which other artists inspire you and how do you incorporate their work into your own? SH
  • I really enjoy looking at Gustav Klimt & Andy Goldsworthy because of the beautiful nature their work creates. Gustav Klimt was a pioneer of form, color and design all of which I frequently use in my art. Human form, intricate design with excitable color is what keeps me interested. Andy Goldsworthy's style is completely natural and the simplicity of medium is so inspiring. I am trying to limit my pallet so that I may explore the beauty of few.
  •  Do you start a piece knowing what the end result will be or do you let it create itself? SH
  • When I start a piece I have somewhat of an idea so I begin to create and usually the transition from beginning to finish ends in a piece slightly better and more amazing then what I had ever imagined.
  •  What is the first step towards discovering your concepts when creating pieces? TP
  • When I decide to make a conceptual piece I think of things that speak to me such as the ecological crisis the earth is going through or how there is children all over the world in need or the boundaries humans have had or have today. I then decide what kind of material would represent me and my style the best and how I could interconnect both. I try not to think to hard and just do so that my mind doesn't make it more complicated as usual.
  •  If you had to choose one driving force of inspiration, what would it be and why? BW
  • My inspiration is all around me, I look outside and I'm inspired by the beauty of earth and I look to people because we are all living in parallel universes. Seeing all types of art keeps me pushing forward always looking to do something that nobody has so I would say that my main drive in creating is to see how unique my art can be and if people will feel moved by it.
  •  How important is inspiration/influence/reference from other art to your own? GC
  • Inspiration/influence/reference are all extremely potent traits of how my art takes place. I try to open my mind to all these influences so that I never create boundaries for myself. Music, dance self expression is all helpful for me to create because I see the constant flow and that without trying you will never see the processes that will you lead you to something great.
  • How do you rationalize your art with the time frame it exists in? GC
  • I believe that my art was suppose to be made in the 60's and 70's because I love psychedelic colors and messages about the planet, discovery and the inner workings of the mind. There was so much experimentation and openness in that era and with that I feel I do think there is a place for me in today's culture where that is prominent so I am stoked to learn about where these ideals take me.
  • Do you find yourself caught in a daydream most of the day? If yes, why? If no, why? SW
  • OH YES!! My mind is constantly moving and dreaming of things to be, become and then I am on a tangent in my own brain. I have tried to control this for  the sake of my interactions whether school or work but just recently I have learned that these bits of lucid dreaming are so beneficial to my creating mindset. I plan on letting these things run ramp-id for the sake of JAPR and the sake of all my art so it can be the best/most beautiful/most moving it can be.
  • Bird or Fish for a day? JVB
  • Being a bird would be an adventure, mostly so that I may fly my way places but I find the motion of the ocean and the supreme beauty of life under water so intriguing. Fish aren't full of disease either so a fishy life for me would be amazing. I have always been in wonder about the myth of mermaids and creating this underwater world, how could this entire place full of things breathing under water be? I want to swim and glide and and collect things from all the under water caves that no one has ever even seen.
  • If you had to be exiled to an island, and could only take one tool, which tool would you take with you and why? SB I'm on an island! WOOO I would bring a book of paper so that I may record my drawings thoughts, poetry, future raps and devise plans on how to create more artistic material such as twine and needles out of bone also to invite natives to my beach parties ;). I work better by recording my ideas so in turn I can release the run on sentence of thoughts in my head. So many ideas to record so I may better survive there with my sketch book.
  • Why did you become an artist and how does it show in your work? HP
I was an artist at birth when I came into the world with a dramatic entrance, almost dieing then coming back stronger and more stoked than ever! I chose to continue to be an artist aside from high school because when I am creating and making things beautiful to look at and beautiful to feel I feel complete. When my creative flow is stunted or has stopped I am not myself. I am always going to be creating or in the atmosphere of art because it feeds my soul. This reflects in my work when I choose to create anything I can. By doing this I am closer to finding the things that I will continue more progressively in the future.
  • What is your favorite color and why? HP
WO! favorite color!!! That is an interesting question, I am addicted to old mustard yellow, teal/turquoise/aquamarine, forest green. maroon, rusty red and henna brown. I F*N love the RAINBOW as well so that might just cancel out what I said before.

Most important questions you will ever ask......an artist:
1. What is the first step towards discovering your concepts when creating pieces?
2. What are some techniques that can make it easier to actualize an idea into a piece?
3. What kind of art is most important?

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

  The free bird leaps
on the back of the win
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hillfor the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Maya Angelou

Caged Bird

New Genres Performance Project
Here I read a Maya Angelou poem: Why the Caged bird Sings
off of my naked body
This piece was meant to elude toward the boundaries we as humans are enveloped in
on a day to day basis, I was trying to show how once we realize these unnecessary
walls we have around us we may become free and see the
uniqueness inside
